And I did tell him. I told him several times, but I don't think he understands that things were different then. He told me himself he's never changed his mind about someone he's been at odds with previously.

Experience, I think. His world seems very [simple? straight forward?] set on its course. The pieces that move about do so predictably--or the role that he plays is clear enough that ally and enemy never blur. I don't think he's ever had cause to make peace with someone... and I'd like to hope that means he's never suffered betrayals, either.
